I’ve been called difficult by people who couldn’t understand why I questioned things instead of blindly agreeing with them. By people who mistook boundaries for disrespect and independence for defiance.
The truth is, I’ve never been difficult to people who respected me.
I’ve always believed that every person has the right to think for themselves. I ask questions. I challenge ideas. I don’t follow a crowd just because it’s easier. If something doesn’t sit right with my values, I won’t pretend it does just to keep everyone comfortable.
Some people don’t know what to do with someone they can’t easily influence. When they realize guilt won’t work, manipulation won’t work, and approval won’t buy your silence, they often settle on a label instead.
“Difficult.”
It’s an easier story to tell than admitting they simply couldn’t control the narrative.
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve stopped trying to prove that I’m easy to deal with. I’d rather be honest than agreeable. I’d rather be authentic than accepted by people who only like me when I’m convenient.
If standing by my principles makes me difficult in someone’s eyes, then maybe the problem was never my personality.
Maybe it was their expectation that I should be easier to control.
Not everyone who challenges you is against you. Sometimes they’re simply unwilling to abandon themselves to make you comfortable. And that’s a strength, not a flaw.
